The Lichtbakenroute is a cycle route that connects the old land (Overijssel) with the new land (Noordoostpolder). The harbours, lighthouses and lighthouse houses you pass mark how important fishing once was here. You can still taste that atmosphere in the old harbour towns.
The cycle route starts in the centre of Marknesse and leads you past the old harbour of Kraggenburg with its lighthouse. You cycle past the light keeper's house of Oud Kraggenburg, taking you back to times long gone. Nature in Voorsterbos and Waterloopbos is very impressive. In the Waterloopbos, you will find the large stream channel of the former Hydraulic Laboratory. Here, people tested how structures in water worked and held up. The harbours of Rotterdam and Bangkok as well as the Delta Works were designed and tested here.
As you cycle further, you pass the harbours of Vollenhove and Blokzijl. You will also pass Blokzijl's old lighthouse, which is a replica of the one built in 1907. This lighthouse now stands in the middle of the arable land symbolising the link with the old country. The lighthouse now watches over the new land.
