Deltawerk// new nature in the Waterloopbos woods

Many years ago, large amounts of water passed through the Delta Flume. This colossal wave basin in the Waterloopbos woods near Marknesse was once used as a test model for the Delta Works. It has now been transformed into an imposing tribute to the research that was performed in these woods.

Waterloopbos
In the Waterloopbos you will find large scale models of around thirty large hydraulic projects from around the globe. The ports of Rotterdam, Lagos, IJmuiden, Istanbul and Bangkok were designed here, as well as the Delta Works. The Waterloopkundig Laboratorium hydraulic lab carried out research in the Waterloopbos for many years, simulating reality and using wave machines to study the workings of water, on barrages, dykes and dams. Discover this remarkable place during a walk through the scale models.

Deltawerk // tribute to Dutch engineering
The Waterloopbos’s original function has now been long abandoned. The area was awarded the status of national monument in 2016. Artists Ronald Rietveld and Erick de Lyon were invited to turn the famous Delta Flume into an enormous piece of land art, which upon completion they entitled Deltawerk //. And certainly impressive it is too! The artists have cut enormous concrete panels from the 250 metre long Delta Flume, which they then turned and placed at various angles. This piece of land art offers a magical experience of light and dark, where magnificent views onto the surrounding nature are revealed in the gaps.
