Open up the throttle on smooth tarmac, weave through the polders, and cycle over the former seabed along vast waters, new nature with landscape art, and former islands rich in history.
When you think of cycling in Flevoland, you might picture dikes, polders, and windmills. But the Netherlands' youngest province has much more to offer, as shown by the route 'Big Pedal through the Oostvaardersplassen', recently cycled by an editor of the magazine Fietssport, who wrote a wonderful article about it. The route is 95 km long, a perfect distance, even in winter. Though it’s most beautiful in spring and summer. A unique feature of the route: most of it lies four to six metres below sea level.
