The picturesque Flevoland mound village Middelbuurt, the many national monuments and the Stone Garden are silent witnesses of the life that once was on Schokland. It has been a long time since the densely populated island was evacuated in 1859 due to persistent storm surges. When the Noordoostpolder was drained, Schokland became ‘an island on dry land’. Worldwide, Schokland is now seen as a symbol of the Dutch struggle against water.

Between junctions 85 and 39, it is also possible to cycle outside the dike (the junction route goes inside the dike) and enjoy the view. To do this, go up the dike and go down again at the first opportunity after the marina to continue the junction route.
