Schokland was placed on the World Heritage List in 1995. It has nine national monuments, including five archeaological areas, and one is a mixed archeaological and constructed monument.
Museum Schokland lies on the Middelbuurt, one of the three last man-made mounds where people lived. The indoor and outdoor exhibitions illustrate the geology and archaeology of the Noordoostpolder, the origin and the loss of the island, the life of the population on Schokland and the reclamation of the Noordoostpolder.
The museum is located in a collection of buildings around the historical church on the Middelbuurt. The buildings are characteristic of the former Zuider Zee area.
