Cycle route: Landart & landscape Lelystad

(32.8 km)

In 1924, this was the Zuiderzee, now you cycle along straight cycle paths of reclaimed land. Engineer Lely pioneered the reclamation, reclamation and layout of the new land. The Zuiderzee became IJsselmeer after the construction of the Afsluitdijk in 1932. Work could then begin to construct the other polders.

The new construction was straight and tight. You can still see that when you cycle outside Lelystad. This route introduces you to the typical polder landscape: straight long roads and windmills. But also with the polder's unique landscape artworks: a steel giant almost 26 metres high and a prehistoric monument (Observatory) which, according to designer Robert Morris, also represents time
