The Voorsterbos also contains boulder clay from the penultimate ice age in the soil. This does not allow water to pass through easily, which meant that the area was not suitable for agriculture. That is why it was given a new purpose as a forest area. The foresters planted various trees there, because they did not know which species would grow well. Go paddleboarding or canoeing on the Zwolse Vaart canal, where you will pass various jetties with information boards that tell you more about the history and nature of the area you are sailing through.
