Construction of the Reality in Almere started in 1977. Seventeen winners were allowed to build their dream home and have it demolished after five years. The prizes consisted of plots of approximately 20x20 meters. Due to its success, the houses are still in the neighborhood.
By their design, the competitions offered the opportunity for the freest designs, especially since the building regulations did not have to be adhered to. Concepts such as demountable, movable and limited lifespan were central. The inactivation of the building regulations meant that the approved structures had to be regarded as temporary.
