Origins of the Ramspoltoren

The tower was built after the land reclamation to overlook the new land. For a while, it was thought to be a Cold War air surveillance tower, intended to spot enemy aircraft. It has since been discovered that the real air surveillance tower was located in a forest near Ens and that the Ramspoltoren was built in 1957 as a recreational observation tower. Even then, the beautiful view over the Noordoostpolder, Oostelijk Flevoland and Kampereiland was already being praised.

Lighthouse Urk

The lighthouse stands at the westernmost tip of Urk. The tower was built in 1844. It serves as a landmark for fishermen and warns of shallow waters off the coast of Urk. This ensured that both recreational and professional shipping could safely navigate past Urk. For a long time, Urk was of great importance to shipping on the Zuiderzee. During the day, skippers used the church tower of Urk as a beacon.

Since 1844

At night, the fishermen's wives lit a coal fire on the coast, waiting for their husbands to return. The coal fire burned too irregularly to be truly reliable. At the behest of the States of Holland, a beacon was therefore built on Urk in 1617, and in 1844 the beacon was replaced by the current lighthouse. The Urk lighthouse can be visited by appointment.

The stilt

On the main island of Marker Wadden, which you can visit by boat from Lelystad, you cannot miss De Steltloper ('the Stilt') observation tower. It stands high on a dune and has a striking red roof. In good weather, you can even see it from Lelystad.

Bird watching

From the Steltloper observation tower, you have an unparalleled view of the various nature islands that together form Marker Wadden. Take your time to take in the diversity of the landscape and gaze at the birds in the distance. Marker Wadden is known as a bird paradise, and you can see all kinds of bird species here throughout the year. No wonder the observation tower is named after a bird species.
