The lock next to the Buma pumping station near Lemmer, between the IJsselmeer and the Lemstervaart canal, was built in 1939-1941 by order of the Dienst der Zuiderzeewerken. On the IJsselmeer side of the lock are a control building for the lock keeper and a bulkhead shed. There is also an iron structure with steel emergency slide, which replaced the bulkhead bars in the 1970s. The Frisian Lock is a national monument. Despite its name and location near Lemmer, the lock is officially located in Flevoland, just north of the village of Rutten.

From November 1940, the Friese Sluis was available for shipping to sail from the Lemstervaart canal to the IJsselmeer or vice versa. This involves bridging a height difference of about six metres. Because of this large height difference, it takes quite a long time to pass the lock; keep in mind about twenty minutes including sailing in and out. The maximum length for vessels entering the polder is 38.3 metres.
