  • Hoekstra and Verhage Fruit

Many fruit growers have been attracted to the region’s rich and fertile soil. The orchards splash colour on Noordoostpolder; the beautiful hues of the blossom in spring are irresistibly seductive. In September the abundant harvest of pears, apples and cherries are recognisable from afar. The modern fruit companies Hoekstra and Verhage offer their own grown, fresh local produce.

  • Kuinderbos Old Port

The old port is located in the middle of the Kuinderbos woods. The port is a reminder of when Kuinre was still a Zuiderzee town and conducting a lively trade with Amsterdam. When the Noordoostpolder was reclaimed in 1942, Kuinre relinquished its claim of being a port town. However, the old harbour once stripped of its function has now been restored to its former glory.

  • Kuinderburcht

You can obtain some wonderful views of the island and the remains of its stronghold from the Kuinderberg hill. In the early Middle Ages, the illustrious lords of Kuinre owned a castle at a strategic location near Kuinre. From here they set out on raiding parties on the Zuiderzee whilst exerting a tight control on the shipping supplying the Hanseatic cities.
