Are you a bit of an early bird? Do you like to get your ducks in a row? Do you believe that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush? You really should take part in the World Migratory Bird Day! World Migratory Bird Day is an inspiring and informative day for anyone interested in birds – whether you are just a beginner or a ‘fully-fledged’ twitcher!

For instance, did you know that a robin looks entirely different in the summer to how he looks in the winter? Or, did you know that certain migratory birds were seen as harbingers of the plague in olden times? Learn all about it on World Migratory Bird Day! The New Land National Park is putting migratory birds in the spotlight on this special day because the entire National Park is an important resting place on all the migration routes between the far north and the most southernly tip of Africa.

On Almere’s side of the Oostvaarders Lakes, you can find a packed programme at The Oostvaarders Nature Experience Centre: there are eco-excursions, bird walks, and lectures (from Ruben Smit among others). Binoculars are available and CameraNU staff are present, there are workshops and demonstrations and a Kids’ Corner with activities. We have highlighted a number of activities below.

  • The wheeled transport season is begun! From the 14th of May, you can climb aboard the eco-bus, or one of our new electric, excursion vehicles. There are several trips planned for this day, such as the golden photo-safari, or an eco-bus trip (please book in advance).
  • The early bird catches the worm! Hear it all from an inveterate twitcher during the Early Bird Walk. Go with a guide on a Raptor Walk, Bird Walk or Evening Walk.
  • Photographer and documentary maker Ruben Smit (a famous Dutch Naturalist) will be lecturing about his most recent nature documentary – Grutto! (Sandpiper!) – and will be premiering unseen images too.
  • CameraNU will be present with various pairs of binoculars. The Digital Guide (for bird recognition) will be demonstrated and will be taken along on various excursions.
  • Making a start with bird photography? Take a workshop in Bird Photography for Beginners, held by two experienced photographers.
  • An experienced taxidermist will be demonstrating how to preserve and stuff birds.
  • There’s a Kids’ Corner for those younger Twitchers, which includes:
    • On Your Way with Forest Ranger Amy
    • Fly like a bird on the zip-wire
    • Get your face painted as a bird, or get a sea-eagle tattoo
    • Felt an egg.
    • Build a bird box
    • Go Tracking on a special trip
    • Bird Safari
    • Go find a wise old owl on an owling trip
    • Make a goose-feather pen
    • Race a Sea-eagle
