In the Wolderwijd off the coast of Zeewolde, you will find an unusual peninsula in the shape of a tulip. The calyx of the tulip, the main island, is the size of a football field and the elongated nature islands form the stem. A 200-metre breakwater connects the island to the mainland. The De Spieghel lock here connects the part of the Wolderwijd with the sailing route De Diamant. The tulip's chalice offers 80 moorings.

Dubai on the Wolderwijd

In 2014, at the start of construction, the Tulpeiland attracted international media attention. The island with its eccentric shape was reminiscent of the artificial peninsula in the shape of a palm, off the coast of the Arab Emirates. Zeewolde was dubbed 'Dubai on the Wolderwijd'. Creator of the creative shape of the island was Zeewolde municipality civil servant Justus Kuijk in 2007. To have a chance of winning European subsidies, the project had to have a high-profile shape.
