The island with its eccentric shape was reminiscent of the artificial peninsula in the shape of a palm, off the coast of the Arab Emirates. Zeewolde was dubbed 'Dubai on the Wolderwijd'. Creator of the creative shape of the island was Zeewolde municipality civil servant Justus Kuijk in 2007. To have a chance of winning European subsidies, the project had to have a high-profile shape.
