Urk is a lively, traditional fishing village, located on the IJsselmeer lake. For centuries Urk was an island in the Zuiderzee and something of the island atmosphere still remains. The best way to experience this is by taking a walking tour with a local guide. Wander through typical 'ginkies' (alleys), past the old harbour with the elderly fishing vessels and on past small fishermen's cottages to the very last working fish market on the IJsselmeer lake. And of course no visit would be complete until you have seen the museum and the lighthouse and sampled some delicious fish.
