The Lichtbaken Route (Beacon Route) cycle route connects the old land (Overijssel) with the new land (Noordoostpolder). The small ports, lighthouses and lighthouse dwellings you pass mark how important fishing once was here. You can still taste that atmosphere in the old port towns.
The cycle route starts in the centre of Marknesse and leads you to the Kraggenburg port with its lighthouse. You will cycle past Oud Kraggenburg’s lightkeeper’s house where you can clearly imagine what it must have been like in times long gone. (Please note: this is not always accessible, see www.debron.nu for specific opening hours).
Nature in the Voorsterbos and the Waterloopbos woods certainly exerts its impressive presence. In the Waterloopbos woods you can discover the large-scale models, aqueducts and structures created by the hydraulic engineers of the former Waterloopkundig Laboratorium to test how their proposals and designs would hold up when exposed to the water. The ports of Rotterdam and Bangkok as well as the Delta Works were conceived, designed and tested here.
Continue cycling and you’ll pass the ports of Vollenhove and Blokzijl, as well as the old Blokzijl lighthouse, a replica of the lighthouse built in 1907. This lighthouse now stands in the middle of farmland, symbolising the link with the old land and standing guard over the new land.
